THE CHRONOTOPIC MODEL OF HERPETOLOGICAL IMAGES IN THE UKRAINIAN FAIRY TALE

This article examines the chronotopic organisation of herpetological images in Ukrainian fairy tales. The relevance of the study stems from the need for a comprehensive theoretical interpretation of the image paradigm “Snake–Serpent– Serpent Maiden” and from the absence of an integrated scholarly explanation of its spatio-temporal structure within the narrative system of the fairy tale. The aim of the article is to develop a comprehensive chronotopic model of herpetological images in Ukrainian fairy tales through the application of geometric modelling and numerical analysis. The object of the study comprises herpetological images in Ukrainian fairy tales, while the subject concerns the spatio-temporal principles governing their functioning and interaction. The methodological framework combines geometric modelling with structural-semiotic and comparative-typological approaches. The analysis draws on a corpus of Ukrainian folk fairy tales from the collections Folk Tales Collected by Petro Ivanov (ed. I. Neilo), Ukrainian Folk Tales (ed. L. Dunaievska), Tales of the Green Mountains: Transcarpathian Tales of Mykhailo Halytsia (ed. P. Lintur), and The Storyteller: Folk Tales of the Ukrainian Carpathians (ed. I. Khlanta). The findings demonstrate that herpetological images are associated with all dimensions of the fairy-tale universe. The chronotope is represented as a four-dimensional structure determined by the three levels of the World Tree and four points of interaction within the cosmological model of the universe. At the same time, the image paradigm “Snake–Serpent–Serpent Maiden” functions as a three-dimensional system in which each point of interaction constitutes an independent semantic vector with a distinct narrative role. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development of an original chronotopic model that explains the functioning of herpetological images within the cosmological structure of Ukrainian fairy tales. The proposed model illustrates the interaction between the image paradigm and the natural boundaries of fairy-tale space and is expressed by the formula 3 × 4 = 12.
