Abstract

In the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of our country, linguistics is also becoming a battlefield – an information one. Communicative strategies for building national resilience, developing a national strategic narrative, developing linguistic means of counteracting the destructive influences of the aggressor state – these and other issues have appeared on the agenda of Ukrainian linguists. However, one of the primary tasks is to identify the linguistic markers of information warfare as one of the discursive dimensions of contemporary international relations. The purpose of the article is to trace the stages of formation and conceptualization of the term “information warfare”, to propose its linguistic definition and to highlight the components that require linguistic comprehension. The author examines 6 stages of conceptualization of the concept of information warfare’: Stage I (1970s) – emergence of the concept of “information warfare” in the security discourse; Stage II (1990s) – institutionalization of the concept of “information warfare”, its status as a term in the official documents of the US Department of Defense; Stage III (late 1990s) – philosophical and communicative understanding of the phenomenon of information warfare; Stage IV (2000s) – conceptualization and mediatization of the term “information warfare”; V stage (2010–2014) – interdisciplinary, in particular linguistic, understanding of the term “information warfare”; VI stage (2014 – present) – development of linguistic tools of information warfare. The article offers the author’s own definition of information warfare in the linguistic dimension as a war of discourses using the capabilities of language, in particular, suggestive ones, to exert cognitive and pragmatic influence on certain target audiences of the enemy in order to achieve strategic goals or counteract its hostile intentions. The author considers the following to be promising areas for further linguistic research on information warfare: the discursive dimension of information warfare; conflict of interpretations as a type of information weapon; language means, in particular, suggestive ones, as an element of shaping the behavior of target audiences and their attitude to war and peace.
